Grosvenor Casinos Adding Hundreds of Employees to Its Workforce

Grosvenor Casinos is turning things around after a workers’ strike last September. The Rank Group-owned casino company in the UK has added over 500 employees to its workforce, including almost a dozen from its own gaming academy.

The new additions are spread out across the company’s various properties in the country, part of a pledge the company made last September to increase its staffing levels. The expansion also closely follows the release of the UK government’s gambling white paper, which seemed to lean favorably toward land-based gaming.

To help solidify its place in the gaming market, Grosvenor also launched a dealer training program out of its Nottingham location. It has wrapped up a four-week course that will pave the way for new croupiers to start shuffling the cards and raking the chips.

Land-based Gambling Gains Ground

There has been a long-held belief that online gambling would cannibalize the land-based market. That’s a possibility, but only 15-20 years into the future. That gives physical operators plenty of time to adjust.

In the meantime, retail casinos will continue to be big business and Grosvenor is going to make sure it maintains its leading role. The gaming academy in Nottingham helps it develop dealers that are able to support the company’s business model and trajectory, as well as the UK’s responsible gambling initiatives.

The recently-concluded training program led to 10 people receiving offers to work for the company, which could be a lucrative proposition. A posting on SmartRecruiters.com about Grosvenor’s latest “trainee dealer” program, which just got underway, indicates that participants receive a £1000 (US$1,239.80) sign-on bonus (with conditions) and tips. Starting pay is £10.85 (US$13.45) an hour, slightly higher than the UK’s national minimum wage rate.

Flagship Property Gets New Boss

Adding dealers to its complement isn’t the only personnel move Grosvenor is undertaking. It announced that its flagship property in London has a new boss, as well.

Peter Turpin is the new venue director of the Victoria Casino. The job entails managing the day-to-day activity of the venue and “ensuring ‘The Vic’ maintains its stature” in the gaming market.

Turpin was with Caesars Entertainment for just over nine years and held various management positions with the company. Most recently, from November 2020 to July 2021, he was the chief operating officer (COO) for Caesars Entertainment EMEA.

He left that job for a stint as COO for Metropolitan Gaming, where he remained for almost two years. He then transitioned to Grosvenor last month.

Turpin’s arrival is part of a larger corporate shakeup at Rank. The company is looking to improve operations on various fronts, for which it has also created a new COO position at the top.

A week ago, Rank announced that it had promoted Jon Martin from Managing Director (MD) at Rank Interactive to the new role. It explained that he will still oversee the “strategy and performance of Rank Interactive.” At the same time, though, he will also have responsibility for the “cross-channel customer experience for the Mecca and Grosvenor brands.”

That opened the door for someone in the gaming industry to possibly relocate to Gibraltar. When Martin moves to the UK from Gibraltar later this year, Rank will want to fill the vacant MD role.
